It's a simple truth of home ownership that you will probably need air conditioning repair from time to time. Not even the most finely tuned piece of machinery can be expected to keep on running forever, free of any maintenance or the touch of a repairman's tools. It would be nice to think so, but we're a long way from that particular machinery being developed, if it ever is. While most homeowners know this much, there are still a lot of myths out there about the prominent and ubiquitous A/C system. Believing in them could prevent you from getting your HVAC the care it needs.

Sharp thermostat drops cool your house faster.
This is a common myth and all it does it cause you to pay more when the electric bill comes in the mail. People also seem to believe the opposite of this myth, which is that shutting off the system or turning the thermostat way up will cause the house to warm up more quickly. Obviously, the house will eventually reach a lower temperature than it otherwise would have if you push the thermostat way down, but the rate of cooling won't be increased. No matter where you set the thermostat, the A/C is going to keep on pushing out the same amount of cooled air.

Energy efficient systems will lower your bill.
This is a big myth, propagated by those who want to sell you these systems. While there is a kernel of truth to it, the savings probably won't be as dramatic as you had hoped. Most air conditioning repair specialists contend that a far better plan of action is to buy a unit that is large enough for the space you want to cool. Getting a system that is too small for your house is going to make it run overtime while it tries desperately to keep up with your cooling needs. Getting one that is too big is massively inefficient and you'll have a unit that is using way too much power for such a small space.

Installation location doesn't really matter.
There are several places in the house where an A/C unit will be much more efficient than it otherwise would be. Talk to an air conditioning repair specialist to determine the best location for the system in your home. Most experts agree that you should find a shaded area under which to put the system, as the harsh glare of the sun all day can have an impact on how well it works to cool your air. At the same time, however, you don't want to shroud your compressor in bushes. This decreases the amount of airflow you get to the machine and increases the amount of debris that will get in and clog up the fan.
